808's and Pianos....BACK!!!!

Trap music and most importantly the 808 bass has now become standard in almost all commercial Hip-Hop and it looks like in 2019 a grand piano is its chosen companion.

Excluding artists like Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole who have managed to prevail with a more original, boom-bap Hip-Hop sound, the aggressive 808 is the sound of mainstream Hip-Hop.

I had never heard a piano on a hit trap song until the song 'Broccoli' was released in 2016 by artist DRAM. The fusion of the happy sounding piano chords and the demonic 808's made way for a new slang term, 'Trappy-go-Lucky' which can describe a song like Lil Yachty's 2016 single 'Minnesota'. However, the Grand Piano seemed to fade back into the distance as more electronic trap took over the mainstream Hip-hop airwaves.

However, since Cardi B's hit single 'Money' last year, pianos are back but not in a 'Trappy-go-Lucky' kind of way. This time they're back with a vengeance. Songs such as 'Sally Walker' by Iggy Azalea, Thotiana by Blueface and most recently 'Clout' by Offset see the Grand Piano back but in a meaner way.

The Piano and 808 fusion is definitely back on the rise and we are going to see more of it in 2019 without a doubt.
