From his recent appearance in DJ Khaled's 'POPSTAR' to a fresh single release, it's clear Justin Bieber is on quite a roll as he presents fans with a new-skool ballad featuring Chicago's very own Chance the Rapper.
Bieber is undoubtedly exploring new musical territory with 'Holy' and.....well.....I think it's actually very good. Not only is it refreshing to see the singer take a break from his commercial pop-trap, but it's also nice to hear a track that embraces classical instrumentation as opposed to digital instrumentation.
'Holy' is a new-skool ballad in the sense that the track's sole melody is played on a piano. Of course, there is some electric bass guitar present to pump up the track, but the piano really takes center stage.
Bieber's vocals are good and flow nicely with the track, however, when Chance the Rapper delivers his verse, one may begin to feel as if Chance's flow and vocal tone suit the record more than Bieber's.
'Holy' is a track where the feature has indeed outshined the main artist. It is a shame because I am now curious as to what would have happened if this instrumental had fallen into the hands of Chance the Rapper as opposed to Bieber. It is not that Bieber didn't deliver, because he did, it is just that the Chicago rapper he chose to feature had an even better delivery.
The video for 'Holy' does confuse me slightly. Although we do see a crucifix on the bedroom wall at the beginning of the video, I cannot say the video has much to do with religion. However, the song is more about Bieber describing a woman as holy, therefore we see a love story play out as opposed to a visual about finding God or something along those lines.
In the opening scene, we see Bieber in bed with a woman, his girlfriend. The movie-like music video attempts to showcase the different lives of the two. Bieber plays a labourer who works in a middle-American quarry whilst his girlfriend tends to the elderly at a care home for a living.
Halfway through the music video, Bieber's boss announces he is closing the plant and makes Bieber redundant. We then see Chance enter delivering his verses in an abandoned greenhouse. Bieber then returns home to a family meal where we see him saying grace with his girlfriend and her family.
The video is a nice accompaniment to a quality single from Justin Bieber here and overall is a good watch. Watch Below.
