Kanye drops 'Jesus is King'

Kanye West is an interesting character to say the least and after teasing a new gospel album for 2019 he has finally released his latest album entitled 'Jesus is King'.

Kanye's recent connection to the church is nothing new. For over a year now fans have been watching Kanye's Sunday Services, where gospel meets hip-hop meets fashion meets Jesus. A profound, strange melange of sounds and aesthetics. A very public lead up to this album. However, 'Jesus is King' hasn't quite lived up to the hype.

The production on 'Jesus is King' is very stripped back. Nothing wrong with that, except that Kanye's lyrics and message don't fully compensate for that which is missing in production.

'Jesus is King' is a Kanye album. Kanye being a rapper, fans would expect some elements of Hi-hop within the production. 'Jesus is King' is not the Hip-hop Gospel fusion fans were expecting merely just Gospel with the occasional rap about Jesus.

Kanye, also on the album seems to draw some parallels between himself and Jesus comparing one record industry executive to Judas, naming his fans as disciples and tries to equate his experience in the industry to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Not in good taste, it didn't quite sit well with me. However, this isn't to say the track was all bad with tracks such as 'On God' delivering a distinctive hip-hop presence in its production. The track 'Water' featuring Ant Clemons also delivers a catchy electric sub-bass riff but it is Ant Clemons vocals and the background vocals that make the track as opposed to Kanye's vocals however the production was refreshing.

The album is very short so there is not a lot to say. Honest opinion.....I have to question whether Kanye is using Christianity as a vehicle to more streams or to assuage the guilt he has in regard to his comments on slavery last year, seeking forgiveness.
