This week the Godfather of Grime released his latest single 'Sorry' featuring Lickle Jay from Northampton and longtime artist friend Riko from Roll Deep and it's fair to say the Godfather of Grime has delivered again.
After a short summer break in Cyprus, with his March single 'Boasty' becoming one of the 2019 summer urban smash hits. Wiley is back and releasing new music.
He started this October by uploading short Instagram snippets of himself in the studio with legendary Grime artists such as D Double E and Jammer as well as showcasing videos and pictures of himself in various places around London including Bow and Camberwell. He was letting the fans know he is back in his city.
After featuring on a high intensity grime set on Pyro radio along with Ten Dixon of Lewisham, Lickle J and the legendary ex-roll deep DJ Karnage Wiley has given us a flavour of the West Indies with this latest Dancehall single.
Released as a dubplate for the legendary Brixton Vinyl Star International Soundsystem, 'Sorry' is an authentic Caribbean track that sees Wiley returning to his Caribbean roots without any attempt to chart by compromising the original late 90's Dancehall sound.
With authentic Jamaican production and matching visuals 'Sorry' almost feels like an extension of 'Boasty' even though they're both sonically very different.
The song is flawless. No compromises made with the sound to try and appeal to the mainstream but just pure Caribbean instrumentation. If only he had released it in the summer!
Very much a summer track the March single 'Boasty' was enjoyable, but had Wiley released 'Sorry' in June or July it would have made for a fantastic Notting Hill Carnival soundsystem track.
Uploaded on Wiley's new youtube channel (after he deleted his old one) the video unusually hasn't racked up that many views, however, over the past year and a half Wiley has estranged himself from the grime scene in a number of ways. His Twitter comments directed at artists and opinionated Instagram stories have been very much in the forefront since the start of the year.
But, with all that being said, his studio IG videos showcase some promising new music and his return to London was overdue. Hopefully we may even see a few live performances as we near the end of the year but 'Sorry' has definitely turned heads after an absence.
